Children Tales

Day 10: Be Brave Challenge – Zumi

I love working with kids. They really are so sweet and funny. I especially love how honest they always are. Too often I feel children are discouraged from being honest for the sake of politeness. I try and encourage the kids that I work with to always tell me the truth…no matter how sucky it is. I have had loads of children coming to enquire if I have dyed my hair this week? ( Like its even a question😉) My stock response has been. ” Yes, do you like it? ” Have had at least three very distinct “No’s” ” so far. 😂 There is one little guy (let’s call him Zumi) that I worked with a few years ago who has no such problem telling the truth. He says exactly what he thinks when he thinks it.

He is the same kid who I once wrote a post on who asked me if I could open the classroom window.
Me: “Why? Are you hot? “
Zuni: “No I just farted” (Enough said;-)

My days are always a little funnier with a Zumi conversation. Today he walks up to me and says:
“Aunty Gayle..you look different.” (read with high pitch child voice)
Me: “I dyed my hair lighter.
Do you like it?”

Zumi: “Ya it’s ok…(pretty clear he wasn’t overly impressed) ….but no, it’s not that….. it’s your body.”                                                                                              Me: “Oh really? (feeling intrigued) What about it is different?” (Pleeeeeease say I’m skinnier!)
Zumi: “You are wearing a white jersey and you never wear white. (FYI: I live in my 2 white jerseys) and your jeans are new.”
Me: “Yes they are….but you know that’s not really my body hey? So you mean my clothes are different? “
Zumi: No it’s your body too……” ( Say it!!! Say it!!!!! …say I’m skinnier!! )
Me: “So what is it then? What is different?”
Zumi: (with the delight of someone who has just had a eureka moment!)
“You are taller! “
(Oh great, every “almost six-foot girls” dream compliment😌)

Have a super weekend.
